A fall detector device is a small wearable sensor that can alert you to an impending fall, giving you a sense of security. These devices are especially useful for older adults who may live alone or have a medical condition that causes balance issues.

Detectors are based on a combination of accelerometers and a software algorithm that can detect between normal activity and an actual fall. These sensors are used by a wide variety of products, from smartphones to Wii gaming systems.

The accelerometers in your phone (or in the sensor on your kid's gaming system) detect motion by measuring speed, distance, and direction. When it detects a sudden downward movement, it sends information to a monitoring center to let them know you need help.

Most systems include a button on the device that you can push for help if you're unable to get up. Then, a professional monitoring agent will talk to you through your two-way speaker. If you don't respond, the agent will call emergency response personnel to make sure you're safe.

Some devices also have a GPS that helps the monitoring center locate you, so they can contact you as soon as possible. These features are particularly useful if you have mobility challenges or can't get to the base station easily.

If you're considering a fall detection system, be sure to choose one with a long device range, like our Reviews Team favorites Medical Guardian and Bay Alarm Medical.
